ANZEC Minke Whale Trip Great Barrier Reef 19-22 June 2023
We have been lucky enough to secure 11 spots aboard Mike Ball Dive Expeditions during the peak time to experience Minke Whales.
The trip begins with a low-levelscenic flight over the Reef to Lizard Island for a bird’s eye view of some of the reefs you’ll be diving. Captain Cook landed here in 1770, climbing to its peak to search for a way through the labyrinth of coral, and naming the island after the many monitor lizards that live here.
This 3-night expedition is dedicated to maximising your in-water interactions at the world’s only known minke whale aggregation sites, whilst enjoying the diverse marine life of the Ribbon Reefs.
Researchers will dive with us and educate you us on the world’s most friendly whale species. Expeditions include interpretive lectures on whale biology, behaviour, and identification to enhance your experience and allow you to connect with nature as never before. As one of a few swim-with-minke whales permitted operators, you will have the chance to be up close as the whales swim to you, making closer and closer passes. Interactions often last more than an hour, providing spectacular opportunities for close up video and photography. It is an unforgettable experience that has been referred to as one of the best wildlife experiences on earth!
Since commencing Minke Whale Expeditions in 1996 they have had a 98% success rate. The largest pod seen was 28 whales, the longest encounter was 10 hours. Every day has a high probability of dwarf minke encounters.
There is a spacious lounge / bar inside, or head up to the sun deck and enjoy the view over the Coral Sea. The food is fantastic, and vegetarians are well-catered for with their own dedicated menu.
If they are not able to locate whales at the reliable sites, up to two hours at a time is spent searching for whales further afield.
We have managed to secure 12 spots (With 6 already booked). We have secured ;-
3 x Club cabins
2x Standard cabin
I have included a link (below) to a booking form which requests a deposit to confirm your spot.
Please can you complete and return to Mike Ball Dive Expeditions - "Att Dorothy" in the header and copy to me (anzecmembership@gmail.com) with the type of accommodation you require and we will try to accommodate your request.

That film got him chosen to film Hillary’s Ocean to Sky expedition. EVENING OF ADVENTURE -28TH NOVEMBER IN SYDNEY **LIMITED TICKETS – BOOK NOW**
The Explorers Club: Evening of Adventure – 28th November 2019
The Australia & New Zealand Chapter of the Explorers Club (ANZEC) is proud to announce the next ANZEC Evening of Adventure in Sydney.
This intimate evening is open to all members and non-members and will include stimulating presentations from two adventurers – Thom Pollard and Rod McCurdy – one, a disciple of mt. Everest, the other, a pioneer of the sea. You will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with other like-minded adventurers on the night.
Thom Pollard – “The Hunt for Mallory and Irvine”
Thom Pollard, from Jackson, New Hampshire (USA), has filmed four Everest documentaries spanning two decades. In 1999, he was high altitude cameraman during the research expedition that discovered the body of lost British mountaineer George Leigh Mallory at nearly 27,000 feet in 1999, 75 years after his disappearance (PBS/BBC). His fascination with the mystery of Mallory and Sandy Irvine has grown over the years, as has his love of all things Everest. In 2014, Thom filmed ‘Accidental Climber’, which has received critical acclaim, about the story of a 68 year old American who endeavoured to be the oldest American to summit Everest. In 2016, as high altitude cameraman during the filming of ‘Sharing Everest’, Thom made the summit on May 22nd under a brilliant full moon. ‘Sharing Everest’ is currently in production. In the spring of 2019 Thom returned to the Tibet side of Everest as a cinematographer for a National Geographic sponsored expedition. Thom is also one of the central characters in the film, feature article, podcast series and book, all of which will be released in 2020.
Rod McCurdy – “Viracocha II”
In 2000, Rod was backpacking through South America and made a serendipitous detour to Easter Island. After arriving in the evening, Rod awoke the next morning to explore the island. At the top of an extinct volcano, Rod met explorer Phil Buck, whom later shared his vision to build the Viracocha 2, a reed ship, and sail from Chile to Australia. Immediately bought in, Rod spent the next three years planning and raising the funds with Phil. As part of the planning process, Rod met with Thor Heyerdahl, receiving practical advice on reed ship construction and route planning. Bearing the Explorers Club flag, the team set sail on the 17 March 2003 from Vina Del Mar, Chile for the first leg of 35 days to reach Easter Island. Following a nearly catastrophic launch, and numerous set backs along the journey, the team delivered on the scientific purpose of the expedition, by landing at Easter Island on the 31 May 2003 – an arduous 75 days at sea.
