The Australia & New Zealand Chapter of the Explorers Club (ANZEC) is proud to announce the next ANZEC Evening of Adventure in Sydney.
This intimate evening is open to all members and non-members and will include stimulating presentations from Antarctic adventurer Gareth Andrew and extreme cyclist Dr. Kate Leeming.
Antarctica 2023 Expedition by Dr. Gareth Andrew
Over the last 10 years Gareth has travelled over 3000 kilometres on foot and unsupported through the Arctic and Antarctic. He was admitted as a Fellow of The Explorers Club in 2022 for his contribution to science, exploration and the advancement of human knowledge of our planet.
After a gruelling 1400km, 66 day journey through some of the toughest and most remote terrain in Antarctica, Gareth and Richard reached the South Pole at 6.30pm on the 18th January 2023.
Battling temperatures below -400C with windchill, hundreds of kilometers of rock-hard ice ridges and extreme physical and psychological isolation the two doctors gathered crucial Antarctic climate science data to aid the global fight against climate change en route to the Pole.
As ambassadors for Scouts Australia Gareth and Richard’s epic journey has been followed by and inspired tens of thousands of young scouts around Australia, New Zealand and World Scouting to reach for their goals and take positive action in the face of the global climate emergency.
Breaking the Cycle by Dr. Kate Leeming
As an explorer/adventurer, Kate has cycled almost 100,000km - two and a half times the Earth’s circumference - on her major journeys. She has successfully completed expeditions on all seven continents and attained four world firsts.
On August 16th 2010 she became the first person to cycle an unbroken line from Africa’s most westerly to its most easterly point, from Pointe des Almadies, Senegal to Cape Hafun, Puntland, Somalia. Cycling 22,040km over ten months through twenty countries, Kate’s Breaking the Cycle in Africa expedition was not only a physical quest but an odyssey to highlight the causes and effects of extreme poverty and specifically what is being done to give a ‘leg up’ rather than a ‘hand out’.
Kate’s previous expeditions include the 13,400km Trans-Siberian Cycle Expedition (1993) when she became the first woman to cycle across the new Russia unsupported (aiding the children of Chernobyl), and the 25,000km Great Australian Cycle Expedition (2004/05), supported by UNESCO, which included the first bicycle crossing of the Canning Stock Route by a woman.
Kate’s current project, Breaking the Cycle South Pole, will be the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. In preparation Kate has completed polar training sessions in Svalbard, Northeast Greenland and Arctic Canada, and preparatory expeditions – in polar conditions, on sand or at altitude - on every continent.
In 2023, Kate has completed two unique fatbike journeys; across Queen Maud Land in Antarctica and Breaking the Cycle Across Australia, 8617km from Australia’s most easterly point, Cape Byron, to its most westerly, Steep Point. Completed on 19th September, Kate pedalled through the remote interior, connecting with and listening to the stories of First Nations elders and their communities.
