ANZEC Aussie Ark Expedition
16- 18th September 2022
Aussie Ark is in the Tomala region of Barrington Tops. It was founded in 2011 as Devil Ark to help ensure the survival of Australia’s iconic Tasmanian Devil. The population of Tasmanian Devils which are only found in the wild in Tasmania were estimated to have declined by close to 70% and predicted to be extinct in the wild in the next 20 years due the devasting Devil Facial Tumour Disease. Ark now holds and breeds the largest mainland population of devils. producing over 300 Tasmanian Devil joeys since its inception. There are over 50 devils now living wild in a feral proof 400ha sanctuary at Aussie Ark.
Due to the overwhelming success of the devil program, Aussie Ark expanded their vision and is now creating a long-term future for many of our threatened Australian species. The threatened species that are part Aussie Ark’s conservation program at the Barrington Tops are:
Tasmanian Devils
Eastern Quoll
Spotted Tail Quoll
Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby
Parma Wallaby
Rufous Bettong
Southern Brown Bandicoot
Long-nosed Potoroo
There are many native species in and around the Ark including within the protected 400ha sanctuary. These include the rarely seen Greater Glider which can be found on night spotting excursions, red-necked wallabies, wallaroos, eastern grey kangaroos, platypus, echidnas, wombats and a myriad of beautiful native birds just to name a few.
The activities while at Aussie Ark include:
Health checks on all the smaller marsupial species
Eastern Quoll pouch checks in the intensive enclosure
Tasmanian Devil pouch checks within the larger sanctuary
Group feed of devils in the larger enclosures
Day excursions as well as night spotting in the wilds of the 400ha sanctuary
