Evening of Adventure Highlights: Domonic James & Yolly Bosiger 17 May 2018

What a night at our Club House in Sydney, perfect setting, with record attendance, and two very different but incredible speakers.

As summer drew to a close we were still fortunate that we could use the outside seating area to host the 70 odd adventurers for dinner and a night to remember.

First guest speaker was Dominic James an airline pilot, who was hailed as a hero for saving the lives of six people after he successfully ditched a plane in the sea off Norfolk Island in 2009.

Dominic also captured us with his tales of adventure after many exciting years as a pilot, he followed his now wife to Darwin as a helicopter tour guide and crocodile handler. His imagery and tales of passengers captured everyone in attendance. His all around versatility in Kakadu and the outback would certainly put him at the top of my list as the best to see the area with.  Click here to view Dominic’s Presentation.

Our second guest speaker was Yolly Bosiger, a young adventurer from Queensland that studied marine biology and law at James Cook University. This lead Yolly to apply and succeed in becoming the 2012 Australasian Our World-Underwater Rolex scholar. After her year as a scholar, Yolly, after many attempts was finally accepted at the BBC Wildlife Channel in Bristol, this was as a researcher on the world famous Blue Planet II. We were treated to inside tales from the series and the pleasures of working with Sir David Attenborough. Exciting behind the scenes filming and imagery were a highlight. Yolky helped everyone understand that it is sheer determination and hard work that set these documentaries apart from others. Click here to view Yolly’s Presentation.

On this night we also had the opportunity to present our Dominic, Yolly, and past presenters with our new ANZEC Certificates of Appreciation. The ANZEC Certificate of Appreciation is an elegant framed certificate, signed by the Chapter Chair Todd Tai, and professionally printed on textured paper by our club printers Special T Print (pro bono). It is now ANZEC chapter policy for all presenters to be awarded with an ANZEC Certificate of Appreciation as a memento of their special night presenting at The Explorers Club.

Also on this night we launched our new ANZEC iron-on patch. Members can now iron-on an ANZEC patch to their favourite item of adventure gear. At only $10 each, they proved very popular with brisk sales of the ANZEC patch being made at our pop-up merchandise shop. A big thank you to new members Andres and Melinda Restrepo for sponsoring the production of the patches.

A photo gallery of the night can be seen here on our Facebook page.

It was wonderful seeing old and new friends attend the event and welcoming new members. These nights are filling fast as both the venue and speakers are is highlights in the ANZEC diary. ANZEC chapter next events are;

Melbourne – 26th of July at The Sun Theatre

Sydney – 23rd of August at The Boathouse Balmoral

Keep an eye out for our next emails, which will provide you with details of these upcoming events.
