Prior to the social distancing practices in Australia we’d been spoiled by our regular Evenings of Adventure in Sydney and Melbourne with so many engaging storytellers.

If you missed any of these amazing events and wish to connect online with recent ANZEC activities here is a summary and links to all the video presentations for the last two Evenings of Adventure

Rod McCurdy presents “Viracocha II” (28 November Sydney)

Rod McCurdy gave a stunning presentation of how he built a ship from reeds and sailed from Chile to Easter Island. He wanted to prove that ancient South Americans could have migrated into Polynesia. The trip was equal parts tedious and tumultuous as they were hit with enormous storms and then had days without wind. Rod is currently raising funds to extend his expedition and sail from South America to Australia in the coming years.

Tom Pollard presents “The Hunt for Mallory and Irvine” (28 November Sydney)

Thom Pollard brought to life his work searching for the bodies of Mallory and Irvine on Mount Everest. He shared with us the many years he spent looking for their camera which may contain the proof of whether they were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest or not. The tale is so enticing, that I can not spoil it for you here.

Matt Carter presents “Trouble in Paradise: The Ghost Wrecks of the Pacific“ (5 March)

Matt Carter spread a dark warning of how the World War 2 shipwrecks that were sunk in the Pacific are starting to leak oil into their pristine marine ecosystem. He is working with the Major Projects Foundation and is currently gearing up to siphon the oil out of the dangerous wrecks before they rust apart and spill out into the sea.

Richard Fitzpatrick presents  “Sharks, Camera Action“ (5 March)

Richard Fitzpatrick told animated tales of his life chasing sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. He took us to Raine Island, where tiger sharks come to feed on the carcasses of turtles and he showed us the dangers of tagging sharks in the wild. The key lesson from his talk: don’t tag hungry sharks from an inflatable boat.

We called Michael Smith who was flying above the Middle East on an expedition to retrace the Great Air Race from UK to Australia. He told us about life in the cockpit and how the countries merge into each other outside his aircraft window.

All of our presentations are available on the ANZEC YouTube channel, and I encourage you to join us virtually at our presentations.
