1939 Chevrolet ‘Woody’, driven by ANZEC members Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris and Jeff Maynard

ANZEC members Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris and Jeff Maynard will feature in the Bay to Birdwood Rally, Adelaide on 20 October. The rally is a celebration of Australian motoring and hundreds of vintage cars drive from Glenelg, through Adelaide, to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. Leading the parade this year is the 1939 Chevrolet ‘Woody’ once owned by Australian explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins. Sir Hubert won the Explorers Club’s highest honour, the Explorers Medal in 1940. After Sir Hubert’s death the car was brought to Australia by another ANZEC member, Dick Smith. Earlier this year, Dick donated this unique vehicle to the National Motor Museum. Dr Harris is patron of the Wilkins Project, established to preserve and promote Sir Hubert’s memory. Jeff Maynard is the author of a number of books about Sir Hubert. Both will be riding in the car for the Bay to Birdwood Rally. If you are in Adelaide on the 20 October, make sure you get along and say hello. Pictured is the car today and (inset) with Sir Hubert Wilkins circa. 1956.
