ANZEC Member James McAlloon Antarctic Sea to Summit Expedition awarded with The Explorers Club Flag

ANZEC Member James McAlloon November 2024 expedition has been awarded with The Explorers Club Flag.  Vice President Martin Nweeia and the Flag and Honors Committee approved the awarding of The Explorers Club Flag to Mr McAlloon’s 1,200km sea to summit Antarctic.

The Flag represents an impressive history of courage and accomplishment. It has been carried by our members to the Moon, to the depths of the ocean, and around the globe. It is both an honor and a privilege to receive this special recognition. Congratulations!

In November, 2024 James McAlloon and his expedition partner Henk Morgans and I will set off from the coast of Antarctica, to embark on a 1,200km journey to summit the continent’s tallest peak from the sea.

During our 10-week expedition, the expedition will traverse the vast expanse of the Ronne-Filchner Ice Cap in Antarctica from the Coast, ski around the Ellsworth Mountain range before navigating through the crevasse-ridden Nimitz glacier to summit the continent's tallest peak, Mt. Vinson, standing at 4,892m. This thrilling and challenging endeavour represents one of the last remaining "firsts" of the Antarctic Continent.

In partnership with Dr. Wolfgang Rack from the University of Canterbury; the world’s foremost expert of Polar Sea Ice, the expedition will be using lightweight measuring devices to collect climate data across a vastly remote and unstudied part of Antarctica. The Sea2SummitAntarctica expedition will be one of the most environmentally friendly on-the-ground surveys ever conducted in Antarctica to be used in formal climate research.
