An Evening of Adventure | Melbourne 27 Jul 2022

The Australia & New Zealand Chapter of the Explorers Club (ANZEC) is proud to announce the next ‘ANZEC Evening of Adventure’ in Melbourne.

Join us at the stunning Sun Theatre in Yarraville from 6:30pm on Wednesday, 27th July 2022.

Open to all members and non-members, this stimulating evening will include presentations from extreme bicyclist Kate Leeming and Sir Hubert Wilkins author and historian Jeff K Maynard. You will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with other like-minded adventurers on the night.

Jeff K Maynard presents "The Incredible Photographs of Sir Hubert Wilkins"

In a world first, aerial photographs of Antarctica in 1928, previously unseen photographs from Shackleton’s last expedition, unpublished images from the Western Front and Gallipoli in World War I, as well as newly-discovered photographs from expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic will be shown in a special tribute to Australian explorer and aviator, Sir Hubert Wilkins. ANZEC member Jeff Maynard recently unearthed a treasure trove of Sir Hubert Wilkins’ photographic negatives, and has had them digitally restored. They will be shown on the big screen at the magnificent art deco Sun Theatre for the first time. Jeff will be available to sign his latest book The Illustrated Sir Hubert Wilkins, which will be available for sale.

Kate Leeming presents “The Andes, the Altiplano & the Atacama Expedition”

On 21st April this year, EC’13 member Dr Kate Leeming completed The Andes, the Altiplano & the Atacama expedition, a 4400km altitude bicycle expedition from Cusco, Peru, across the Bolivian Altiplano and the Argentinian Puna de Atacama to finish at the base of Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest volcano. The expedition was conceived as one of six preparatory expeditions for Kate’s planned bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent but developed into a credible expedition it its own right. The story of the journey was more than an exploration of Kate’s physical and mental limits and the positive mindset she must adopt to succeed. It is infused with insights about Andean cultures, past and present, focusing on what the mountains mean to the people. Kate aimed to find out whether there are lessons to be learnt from Incan and other Andean cultures that can be related to some of the issues confronting our global community today, such as climate change, sustainable consumption, gender equality and the need to preserve and work with our environment, not against it.

An Evening Not To Be Missed!
