Diamond Dust: The first Australian Woman to winter over at the Geographical South Pole by Julienne I. Harnett

This book is the memoir of the first Australian woman to Winter over at the Geographical South Pole where she was employed as an astronomer. The book reflects on the excitement and anxieties of the preparations to travel to the pole, the challenges and ordeals she experienced along the way.

The book also describes the crisis experienced when separating from her South Pole family at years end. This year was the most extraordinary Julienne has ever had.

ANZEC Member - Julienne (Jules) Harnett

Jules completed her PhD at Sydney University with a thesis entitled “Radio Emissions from Optically Bright Galaxies”. Thereafter she has worked as a research Astronomer at many international telescopes including The Antarctic Submm-Telescope and Remote Observatory which is located at the geographical South Pole. Jules was the first Australian woman to spend a full year in this harsh environment. Her most recent appointment was at the USA National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank, West Virginia. On her return to Australia she authored a book about her South Pole experiences. Jules is an Alexander von Humboldt fellow and secretary of the NSW branch.
